DuckDuckGo search in Opera Mini

Posted on 27 February 2012 by smyru

In Opera Mini it's impossible to create a search of the privacy oriented DuckDuckGo crawler (DDG). But there is a workaround for this issue thanks to Opera Link.

Here is recipe: in Opera browser on your computer create a custom search for DDG. Just go to Preferences (Ctrl+F12) > Search and click Add. Then in the Address field put such URL: http://duckduckgo.com/?q=%s. Make sure you have not marked "Use POST". Fill the necessary search name and a shortcut for desktop browser URL bar use case.

Now you need to turn on Opera Link, if you have not used it before you will need to create an account and make sure you are synchronizing "Search engines" with it. To do so, click the cloud icon in the left bottom of Opera browser window (remember we are still on the computer) and enable Link or if you have used Link before choose Configure and make sure Search engines is marked to be synchronized. Wait a bit, until your data is synchronized to Link servers. Now pick your phone and login to Opera Link in your Mini.

In Mini 4 open "Synchronize Opera…" link from the start page and login using the same account as you used for Opera on the computer.

In newer Minis go to Menu > Settings and toggle Opera Link. Login to the account and let Mini synchronize setup.

Et voil?. Now you should have a DDG in your search engines in Mini.
